Binaural Hearing Aids…Do I NEED TWO?
YES! If you have two ears with hearing loss, and if both ears could benefit from hearing aids, you need two hearing aids.
86 percent of all new hearing aid wearers are fit binaurally (both ears).
Here’s why…
It is important to realize there are no “normal” animals born with only one ear. Simply stated, you have two ears because you need two ears. If you try to amplify sound in only one ear, you cannot expect to do very well. Even the best hearing aid will sound “flat” or “dull” when worn in only one ear.
You need two ears to tell where the sound comes from (localization). Localization is crucial for determining the origin of warning signals, alerting sounds, and conversational speech.
Using both ears together allows your central nervous system (your brain) to better focus on and process sounds you want to hear (human speech) while more or less “squelching” (ignoring) sounds you do not want to hear (background noise). One ear working by itself cannot do this very well. The brain must compare and contrast loudness, pitch, and the phase (timing) of the sounds from the two ears to make sense of it!
Should I buy my hearing aids off the Internet?
This would be similar to buying your eyeglasses without a prescription lens. How would you know what strength of lens you need for the glasses? What would you do when you get them, and you cannot see with them? Who would you call for follow-up care?
Because hearing aids are custom fitted to your ear shape, it is sometimes necessary to make modifications in order for them to function properly and feel comfortable in the ear. If hearing aids are purchased online, it appears to be less expensive. However, finding a hearing care provider to make necessary adjustments and modifications in the long run will usually cost more. Hearing aids purchased online do not come with professional service and follow-up care.
How long do hearing aids last?
The most common repairs required by hearing aids are based on ear wax and debris blocking the microphones and the receivers. In other words, most repairs required are due to poor/low maintenance. The following information can help you decide:
The noise inside an aircraft, particularly if you are seated toward the rear, can be quite loud. Hearing instruments may be most comfortable if turned down or off in this situation.
Changes in air pressure, especially when the plane is taking off or landing, can cause discomfort until your ears “pop”. This equalizes the pressure behind the eardrum with the outside air pressure. Usually, wearing your hearing aid will not affect this process. However, if you have a cold or sinus problem, these pressure changes can be harder to equalize, and the discomfort may last longer.
Why do I hear the ringing noises in my ears?
