How to insert and remove your hearing aid

Our Tulsa Audiologist explains how to insert and remove your hearing aid. Place the hearing aid in your hand so that the remove-and-replace cord is facing downward. With your other hand, hold the side of your head where you will be placing the hearing aid. Gently pull up on the earlobe so that the opening to the ear canal is exposed. Holding the hearing aid by the clear plastic removal cord, insert the hearing aid into your ear canal, and push it until it’s snug.

To remove the hearing aid, simply pull down on the removal cord. If you are having difficulty removing the hearing aid, Tulsa Audiologist Dr. Susan Neely recommends trying to wiggle it back and forth as you pull on the cord. With a little practice, removing and inserting your hearing aid will become second nature.

-Once you have removed any visible dirt or debris, it’s time to disinfect the hearing aid. You can do this by wiping it down with a mild cleansing solution (such as isopropyl alcohol). Be sure to completely dry the hearing aid before putting it back in your ear.

-If you wear in-ear monitors (IEMs), it’s also important to clean the ear tips on a regular basis. Many IEMs come with multiple sets of ear tips, so be sure to switch out the ear tips every few weeks and wash them thoroughly with soap and water.
