Insurance coverage for hearing aids is limited, but it does exist. Hearing Solution Centers can help you uncover whether you have coverage or not.
Insurance and Hearing Aids
One would think that insurance companies would cover the cost of hearing aids as they are a necessary medical device (and really the only option) for many people dealing with hearing loss. However, that logic doesn’t hold up when it comes to hearing aid coverage.
Whether hearing aids are covered, or partially covered, by your insurance provider depends on many factors. Your age, location, and insurance plan are just a few of the elements that play into your determined coverage. Considering the cost of prescription hearing aids ranges from $2-$7K, having some coverage can be very helpful.
Factors Affecting Coverage
Age
On a positive note, hearing aids are covered for all children in every state in the U.S. through Medicaid. Adult coverage for hearing aids through Medicaid differs by state as do the details of eligibility. Medicare for seniors may cover some of the cost of hearing aids, but only if you opt in to the Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. General Medicare plans Parts A & B do not offer any coverage for hearing aids or hearing tests.
Oftentimes older people purchase supplemental health insurance, and some of these plans do cover some or all of the cost of hearing aids.
Occupation
Depending on where you work, or who you work for, the cost of hearing aids may be covered. For instance, Federal employees do have partial or full coverage for hearing aids under the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program. Large corporations may also offer some coverage depending on which tier of coverage you’ve chosen.
Insurance Plan
As mentioned above, older adults are able to opt in to Medicare Advantage Plan C which offers some coverage for hearing aids. If you are not eligible for Medicare yet, and are still working, make sure to thoroughly research the plans that are offered through your employer. Generally, there will be a plan that offers at least some allowance towards hearing aids. Saving money in an HSA (health savings account) may be a good idea as well. This pre-tax money can be held and used for medical needs, like hearing aids, when they arise.
There are also a number of states that mandate health insurance companies provide full or partial coverage for hearing aids for children, and some that extend those mandates to adults. However, that coverage varies a lot from state to state.
Many aspects must be considered when figuring out if you’re qualified for full or partial coverage for hearing aids. The process can be daunting and frustrating, however Hearing Solution Centers is here to help!
