Hearing aids sometimes stop working, but there are a few easy things you can do from home to get them operating again. Keep reading to learn more.
Preventative Hearing Aid Care
Those who wear hearing aids know that cleaning your hearing aids regularly should help to keep them in working order. However, there are a lot of little nuances to our everyday lives that produce dust and debris that we don’t always think about. The buildup of this debris on your hearing aids can be culprit #1 as to why they might not be working correctly.
Daily Cleaning Tips
There are some things you can do daily to ensure that your hearing aids are in top condition. These include: removing your hearing aids when applying perfume, make-up, aftershave, hairspray, or suntan lotion. All of these products can produce fine particles that can make their way into your hearing aids and cause issues. Many times this debris settles on the microphone or receiver of your hearing aid making it more difficult for your hearing aid to work properly.
Using a soft cloth to clean your hearing aids every day will help them function. No solvents or water should be used on the cloth as this may interfere with the hearing aids’ mechanisms. After cleaning, your hearing aids should be stored in a cool, dry place.
Even when you clean your hearing aids daily, there can be problems that arise. These hassles usually occur at the most inconvenient of times which is why it’s important to know some tips to get your hearing aids working again without having to visit a professional.
Troubleshooting from Home
Knowing that you can repair small glitches that may occur with your hearing aids will give you peace of mind and confidence. Of course the team at Hearing Solution Centers (HSC) is always here and happy to help, but it does save you some time if you can address the problem on your own. Here are three troubleshooting options you can use if your hearing aids stop working:
#1. MyStarkey App.: Using this App to run a self check of your hearing aids can be extremely helpful. The App will tell you if there is something plugging the microphone, blocking the receiver, or if the circuit is damaged. It uses green/yellow/red lights to indicate whether each component is working. The MyStarkey App has a lot of other helpful functions as well.
#2. Clean Well: When the receiver of your hearing aid isn’t working properly, it’s usually the filter to blame. Cleaning the hearing aids well with a dry cloth, or an audio wipe can help greatly. An eyeglass cleaning cloth can also work. Using a soft toothbrush, like a children’s small toothbrush, to brush your hearing aid can be helpful to remove debris.
#3. Reset in Charger: Sometimes hearing aids will stop working and need a reset. Putting them into the charger not only resets the hearing aids, but also shows whether your charger is operating correctly. You can also manually shut them off and turn them back on.
If you’ve completed all three steps and the issue with your hearing aid is still not resolved, it’s time to call the experts at Hearing Solution Centers. HSC can change out some pieces, do a little deeper cleaning, or send the hearing aids out for repair. Whatever it takes to help you and fix your hearing aids is what we’ll do!
